Eagle Tennis Advances Eight to Region Semifinials

EAGLES: Five Advance

Regional tennis tournament started on Saturday morning at the Larry Heflin Tennis Courts in Lone Oak.  Graves County sent four boys and four girls participants to the end of season tournament with a chance to play in the KHSAA state tournament. 

Jaron Hale and Issac Carrico were selected as a number two seed in the boys’ doubles draw.  Other participants were eighth-grader Brady Ellegood and Alejandro Hernando, Matthew Whitaker, and Drew Jackson.  After Saturday’s play was completed, Hale-Carrico and Ellegood-Hernando were the only remaining boy participants.  Matthew Whitaker lost to Hayden Jaco of Marshall County by a 6-0 6-0 score. Drew Jackson lost to number three seed Davis Rowton by a 6-0 6-0 score. Hale-Carrico will play Walker-Crabtree of McCracken County and Ellegood-Hernando will face Dodson-Dodson of Mayfield.  They will play on Monday in the quarterfinals with a chance to advance to the semifinals on Tuesday and the finals on Wednesday.


Hale-Carrico won Buchanan-Ross 6-0 6-0

Ellegood-Hernando won Froelhich-Mudd 6-1 6-4

Matthew Whitaker lost  Hayden Jaco 6-0 6-0

Drew Jackson lost  #3 Davis Rowton 6-0 6-0


In Lady Eagle play, junior Carson McKee received a number 5 seed in the girls’ singles draw. After Saturday’s play, McKee, eighth grader Laken Schultz, and Gabbie Lamb and Madison Wiggins remain in the draw. None of the Lady Eagle players have an easy match on Monday as McKee plays the number three seed, Natalie Lansdon of Paducah Tilghman, Schultz will play four seed Lara Shannon of Paducah Tilghman, and Lamb-Wiggins play number one seed Poat-Puryear of McCracken Co.  The only Lady Eagle that did not advance was Maddy Williams and Ellie Mitchell. They had a tough opponent in number four seed Jones-Kinsey of Murray.  Jones-Kinsey jumped out to a 6-1 lead but the Lady Eagle middle schoolers bounced back to go ahead 4-1 in the second set.  The older more experienced Tigers came from behind to tie the score and finish with a 6-1 7-5 victory.

Laken Schultz won Ashley Phillips Marshall 6-3 6-1

Laken Schultz won Maggie Smith St Mary 6-1 6-3

Lamb-Wiggins won Wheeler-Myers Ballard Memorial 6-0 6-0

Ellie Mitchell-Maddy Williams lost Jones-Kinsey 6-1 7-5
